Integrating the medical knowledge of the East with the West
Applicable to a variety of medical complaints and most commonly used for pain, acupuncture is a valuable tool and approach within medicine. Although there are various theories as to acupuncture’s exact mechanism of action, its efficacy in clinical trials has led to its adoption by national health systems, hospitals, and clinics. As with all types of medicine, there are different styles and foci within acupuncture itself. Electroacupuncture, traditional acupuncture, and cupping are just some examples of this.
Acupuncture is a modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a holistic diagnostic and treatment system that aims to strengthen a person’s innate healing ability and to restore the inner balance. Acupuncture has been practiced for over thousands of years to treat a broad range of conditions and is constantly evolving. The overall goal is not just to treat existing conditions, but to also prevent recurrences and promote overall well-being.
Acupuncture utilizes very fine sterile needles on specific points on the body to gently stimulate and guide the movements of energy (Qi) within the body to release physical, emotional and psychological blockages. Each treatment is individualized based on the patient’s constitution, determined by their pulse and tongue patterns in addition to presenting signs and symptoms. Besides acupuncture, acupressure, reflexology, cupping, Gua Sha (specialized scraping technique to release blockages) and Tui Na (Chinese bodywork) may be utilized during treatment to achieve the maximum therapeutic effect.
